Welcome to teaching at 91ÁÔÆæ. These steps walk you through getting your Citadel accounts, completing required training, and preparing your course.
1. Get Your Citadel Email Address
You will receive your Citadel email address after you finish the onboarding process with Human Resources. You need it before you can get access to Canvas, training, or other Citadel systems, and it is how CEITL and your students will contact you.
2. Get Access to Canvas
You will have access to Canvas once you are listed as the instructor of record for a course in Banner. Log in at with your My Citadel Portal username followed by @citadel.edu.
Changes to course enrollment, such as adding a co-instructor, are made in Banner through the Registrar and then appear in Canvas.
See Canvas for Faculty for login help and the faculty resource course.
3. Complete Citadel Teaching Foundations
Once you are listed as an instructor of record in Banner, CEITL enrolls you in the Citadel Teaching Foundations trainings in Canvas.
- All instructors: Canvas Fundamentals and Best Practices for Assessment and Grading
- Online, hybrid, or hi-flex instructors: also Best Practices in Online and Hybrid Teaching
Each training is self-paced, and you complete it by scoring 90% or higher on its final quiz.
4. Attend CEITL New Faculty Orientation
Each August, before fall classes begin, CEITL hosts a two-day New Faculty Orientation for all instructors of record. It is separate from the orientation Human Resources provides.
5. Prepare Your Course
- Follow the steps in Preparing for a New Term to set up your Canvas course.
- Upload your syllabus to Canvas and keep your grades in the Canvas gradebook each semester. See Syllabus Design.
- Review the Continuity of Instruction Plan for the emergency language your syllabus needs.
- Decide whether and how students may use generative AI in your course, and state it in your syllabus. See Teaching in the Age of AI.
- Make your course content accessible. See Accessible Canvas Content.
- If you are teaching online, your course must go through an online course review before you teach it. Reviews begin at least one semester before the course is offered.
6. Know Your Teaching Tools
These tools are available to all instructors:
- DesignPLUS: builds clear, consistent, and interactive Canvas pages. See DesignPLUS.
- Canvas Studio: lets you create videos in Canvas and add captions. See Canvas Studio.
- Turnitin Similarity: checks student work for originality. See Turnitin.
- Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor: secure online exams. Closed-book exams in online courses require a CEITL-approved proctoring service. See Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor.
- UDOIT and TidyUP: UDOIT scans your course content for accessibility issues and shows you what to fix, and TidyUP helps you find and remove unused files. See Accessible Canvas Content.
- ReadSpeaker: reads course content aloud for you and your students. See ReadSpeaker.
- Zoom: supports virtual meetings, office hours, and live online sessions. See Zoom.
Your school or department may also use its own tools. Ask your department head which ones apply to your courses.
7. Attend Faculty 101
Faculty 101 is required for new full-time faculty and ROTC instructors. CEITL adds you to the series, and sessions meet once a month for one hour throughout the year.
