The Advising Community
91ÁÔÆæ’s advising community is made up of dedicated faculty and staff who are committed to helping students succeed. From faculty advisors and Advising Facilitators to TAC Officers, Battalion and Company Advisors, 91ÁÔÆæ Affairs professionals, 91ÁÔÆæ-Athlete Advisors, and pre-professional advisors, each brings unique expertise and support to the student experience. Together, they create a network of guidance, encouragement, and partnership that helps students navigate their academic journey, pursue their goals, and make the most of their time at 91ÁÔÆæ.

Primary/Major Advisor
Primary/Major Advisors are faculty or professional staff within each department who provide students with personalized guidance throughout their time at 91ÁÔÆæ. As an integral part of the student success network, they foster meaningful advisor-student relationships that support academic achievement, engagement, and long-term goal attainment. Through individualized advising, they help students navigate academic requirements, identify opportunities for growth, explore career aspirations, and connect with campus resources. Regular meetings, including planning sessions held each semester before registration, help students stay on track toward graduation, overcome challenges, and make informed decisions that support their academic, personal, and professional success.

Advising Facilitators
Advising Facilitators play a vital role in advancing student success by supporting both students and advisors throughout the academic advising process. They help advise incoming freshmen each summer, facilitating a successful transition to 91ÁÔÆæ, and assist students throughout the academic year in preparing for advising appointments and accessing academic resources. Advising Facilitators also coordinate school-level advising initiatives, provide advisor training, promote best practices, and share insights from professional development opportunities to enhance the quality and consistency of advising. Through these efforts, they help create a supportive advising experience that fosters student engagement, persistence, and academic achievement.

Morgan Mann | Undergraduate Program Coordinator & Academic Advisor
“As an academic advisor, I believe that advising is a holistic, student-centered practice that empowers individuals to achieve their personal, academic, and professional goals. Advising is not merely transactional; it is a dynamic and collaborative process rooted in trust, respect, and mutual accountability. At its core, advising is a partnership-a relationship that nurtures growth and fosters resilience while equipping students with the tools and confidence to navigate their unique academic journeys.
Each student brings distinctive strengths, aspirations, and challenges. My role is to meet them where they are, honor their individuality, and tailor my approach to their specific needs. By fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment, I strive to ensure that every student feels valued and respected, regardless of their background or life experiences.
Advising goes beyond course selection; I believe it should help students connect their academic experiences to their broader life goals. By posing thoughtful questions and engaging in reflective dialogue, I aim to help students uncover their passions, set meaningful goals, and develop critical thinking, self-awareness, and resilience. Through open communication and trust, I support students in identifying their strengths, clarifying their goals, and overcoming obstacles along the way.
While I provide guidance, encouragement, and mentorship, I also recognize the importance of promoting autonomy and self-efficacy. Empowering students to take ownership of their decisions enables them to become active participants in their education and fosters their growth into confident, lifelong learners.
I am committed to continuous growth and development in my role as an advisor. Staying informed about institutional policies, evolving best practices, and trends in higher education ensures that I provide the highest quality support to students. At the same time, I value learning from my interactions with students, allowing their diverse perspectives and experiences to inform and enhance my approach.”

Andrea Gramling | Senior Instructor: Department of Biology
“As a college student, I prided myself on being self-sufficient. I figured out how to register for classes and choose the courses needed to complete my degree on my own. With a different advisor each year, I did not develop a strong professional relationship with anyone on campus until my senior year. Looking back, I wish I had realized that academic advising goes beyond simply choosing classes. In my role as an instructor and as an advisor, I want to provide the type of support that I did not know I needed.
I believe that effective advisors should be well-versed in policies, procedures, and degree requirements, but also dedicate time to building meaningful relationships with students, helping them maximize their college experience. Cadets at 91ÁÔÆæ choose to embrace the challenges of the Fourth-Class System, but that doesn’t mean every aspect of their time here should feel like a struggle. Advisors can make a huge difference by helping students identify the obstacles standing in the way of their personal and professional success. By offering strategies and resources, advisors can empower students to find academic success, direct their own learning, and develop positive habits and professional skills.”
Sean Keiper | Manager of 91ÁÔÆæ Services
“At the heart of my advising philosophy is a deep commitment to students as whole individuals. I believe that effective advising is student-centered, intentional, and authentic. Advising is built on trust and meaningful connections, where students feel genuinely heard, valued, and supported.
I believe that advising is a space for reflection, growth, and empowerment. I strive to create environments where students can explore their goals, navigate challenges, and take ownership of their educational journey. Through intentional conversations, I encourage skills that extend far beyond the classroom, such as critical thinking, self-awareness, and resilience.
In the Zucker Family School of Education, I help students connect their academic choices to their broader life purpose as current or future educators. My goal is to support them in building a strong foundation for lifelong learning and professional growth, so they are prepared to meet the needs of every child they will teach or support.
I view advising as a vital link to the broader support systems at 91ÁÔÆæ. 91ÁÔÆæs thrive when they feel connected academically, socially, and emotionally. I work to ensure that students do not navigate their college experience in isolation by connecting them to the right resources, communities, and opportunities. By cultivating a strong network of support, I aim to help students feel empowered, confident, and ready to succeed in all areas of life.”

TAC Officers
Each battalion and company (Teach, Advise, Coach), a retired or reserve military officer, supports cadets in leadership, discipline, and daily cadet life. As mentors and advisors, TAC Officers play a critical role in student well-being, success, and retention by helping cadets navigate challenges, build resilience, and balance academic, military, and personal responsibilities. Through regular engagement and individualized support, they help students stay connected, overcome obstacles, and persist toward graduation. Their guidance complements academic advising and contributes to the development of Citadel cadets.

Battalion and Company Advisor
Each battalion and company is assigned a faculty or staff member who partners with cadet academic officers and NCOs to promote academic success, engagement, and personal development within the unit. Through mentoring, coaching, and collaboration, these advisors help cultivate a culture that values academic achievement, accountability, and peer support. By working closely with cadet leaders, they help identify students who may need additional assistance, connect cadets with campus resources, and foster a sense of belonging and community within the Corps of Cadets. Their efforts contribute to student success and overall well-being by ensuring cadets feel supported both academically and personally. Cadets seeking academic assistance should contact their academic officer or NCO. For questions about the company advising program contact Academic Affairs (opens in a new tab). “As an advisor, I believe I am fulfilling a calling-serving God by serving students, so they may go on to serve our nation and the world with character, purpose, and conviction. My role is not simply administrative or academic; it is deeply relational and rooted in the belief that every student, regardless of background, belief, or life journey, carries intrinsic value, potential, and purpose.
I am passionate about walking alongside students as they pursue growth-academically, professionally, and personally. Whether they arrive with confidence or uncertainty, my goal is to ensure that every student who enters my office leaves feeling seen, heard, and supported. I aim to create a space where students know they matter-not just for what they achieve, but for who they are.
Advising is a shared responsibility. As an advisor, it is my duty to listen actively, guide intentionally, and provide resources and insight that empower students to make informed decisions. I am here to help them discover their strengths, navigate challenges, and clarify their goals. I commit to staying current in my field, reflecting regularly on my practice, and continually growing in empathy, cultural awareness, and advising strategies so I can serve students better.
At the same time, students have a responsibility to take ownership of their journey. I expect them to come with openness, engage in meaningful dialogue, and take action on the plans we co-create. Growth cannot be forced-it must be chosen. My role is to encourage and equip; their role is to step forward.
I will know I have been successful as an advisor not merely when students graduate, but when they leave empowered, resilient, and confident in their path. Success is seeing a student light up with clarity after a hard conversation. It’s watching them overcome doubt, find direction and go on to lead with integrity. Ultimately, it’s knowing that I helped plant seeds-whether seen or unseen-that will bear fruit in their lives and in the communities, they will serve one day.”
