They weren’t off the grid, but they were close.

Sardinia is a living laboratory for students to explore and embrace so much of what has been lost in our fast-paced, modern world. As one of the world’s original Blue Zones, regions known for unusually high rates of longevity, Sardinia has attracted researchers seeking to understand why its residents live so long. The island’s Blue Zone has a high concentration of centenarians, and while diet may play a role, researchers have identified many other factors that may contribute to longevity. The island exists on the edge of modern life, and it retains a unique pace and purpose. For those who spend time there, it calls them to embrace its culture and way of life.

The seven students who accompanied me to Sardinia this summer will one day be clinicians responsible for helping others navigate life’s trials through the discipline of clinical counseling. It was my intention to expose them to the secrets of the Blue Zone lifestyle so that they could use this experience to help others facilitate personal growth. Over the course of our three weeks in country, we experienced Sardinia’s water and natural beauty, traditions, village life and challenging terrain. While on the surface these activities may not seem to be related, they all point to principles related to Blue Zone lifestyles, including the importance of place, attention restoration, culture, rituals, community, belonging and resilience.

Adjusting to the slower pace was part of the experience. Family meals could stretch for three or four hours, and activities planned for half a day sometimes lasted all day. It took some students nearly a week to settle into the rhythm.

For graduate student Austin Nelson, that adjustment meant becoming more comfortable with uncertainty. In her journal, she reflected on her desire to know what was coming next and began considering the distinction between what she could and could not control.

One of the first lessons learned was the importance of place. The places we visited all had meaning and importance to the members of the communities. Places matter because people ascribe importance to them over time, and they allow us to pause and remember, to belong and connect.

From the archaeological site of Santo Stefano in Oschiri to the village of Aritzo, high in the mountains, students learned that places create meaning and identity. In Aritzo, they spent time with a family that had lived around the world before returning home to the village. As we walked through town, it seemed everyone knew everyone else. We saw deep connections to place, land and community. While we learned that some of us have special places that are meaningful to us in America, our constant movement and migration have diminished the importance of place in our lives.

The Blue Zone experience centers on having a deep connection to place because it provides purpose, routines and daily patterns that cultivate health. This lesson will be important as students work with clients and better understand the special places in their lives.

A second lesson we learned was the importance of taking time to recover from the many things that compete for and diminish to be present. This is an important lesson to carry home and one that will be helpful to the students as they work with clients. The slower pace we experienced in Sardinia also encouraged a more intentional relationship with the natural environment.

All over Sardinia, we experienced the importance of culture, ritual and family identity. Everyone has a purpose. This was apparent during a pasta-making experience in Aritzo, where we gathered around a long table, each with our own station, as two grandmothers stood in the middle showing us what to do. Using flour, salt and water, we kneaded and shaped the dough as the women instructed us in Italian, with our guide translating. There was even a little competition among the group to see who could do it best. Graduate student Maria Del Mastro, who had experience cooking and baking, was a natural. Hers were as good as those made by our instructors. Mine were not.

Elders are included in activities, and their knowledge and contributions are valued and sought after. We witnessed communities caring for elderly and disabled residents with a sense of pride. The one nursing home we saw was in the middle of the village, where residents remained part of community life. There is an order that shows community members who they can depend on, what matters most and what has been passed down. The rituals of meal preparation and making pasta are central to Sardinian culture. These activities have extraordinary psychological meaning because of the involvement of the whole family. We learned that belonging and having a role in family routines is a protective factor for a healthy life.

The hikes were challenging, taking students over rugged terrain and pushing some beyond their comfort zones. Movement was also part of daily life. We witnessed older Sardinians working in their yards and walking miles. Rather than seeing exercise confined to gyms or fitness centers, we saw physical activity incorporated into everyday routines. The rugged terrain also offered lessons in resilience, not simply toughness but the ability to adapt, recover and continue to function through difficulties. What was most enlightening to the group was that resilience isn’t individual, but rather that people are more resilient when they are supported by others. This type of support was evident throughout the villages and communities we visited along the way.

While Blue Zones are typically associated with longevity, we learned that they are about much more than simply living a long life. We discovered that environments support health or reinforce distress, and that we need places and spaces to recover. We experienced the critical importance of connection and how it can apply to the students’ future clinical work, where they will need to respond to people and circumstances they cannot always predict. Through examples of families supporting each other across the lifespan, we discovered how meaning, values and personal narratives impact health. Daily routines involving movement showed us the importance of incorporating exercise into everyday life and how small physical changes can support mental health.

I think the most meaningful outcome of this trip is that our students will now approach their future work with a Blue Zone-informed mindset. Typically, clinicians focus on tracking symptoms and reducing distress, which is critically important. However, as we learned about the people and lifestyle of this beautiful island, we realized that we need to ask different questions to help our clients. How has their environment shaped them? What kind of relationships surround them? What helps them recover when stressed? What traditions ground them, and what communities and rituals provide them with purpose? What is their personal story, and how does it affect their overall well-being?

One of our final lessons took place over breakfast on the terrace of our hotel. We talked about mortality, and I asked the students to calculate approximately how many days they had left. Then we talked about our “why” and what we were going to live for. How important is what you’re worried about right now? Their journal entries afterward were powerful.

As a faculty member, it is such a privilege to share the world with my students and to experience learning and growth alongside them in new and stimulating environments. The lessons learned will shape each of us and make us better at helping others.

In June, psychology professor Chip Taylor and a group of students traveled to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia for three weeks to immerse themselves in a culture where the pace of life is slower and relationships, community and rituals shape daily life.
